Back in the driver’s seat: Managing driving-related anxiety

Driving is a skill and activity that most of us take for granted in everyday life. However, for some people even the thought of driving and being ‘in the ‘driver’s seat’ can be terrifying, triggering anxiety symptoms such as pounding heart, sweating, shakiness and feeling sick.

The Back in the Driver’s Seat programme was developed by and is facilitated by Dr Jacqui Triffitt.  The Back in the Driver’s Seat programme is CBT based and helps participant’s understand driving-related anxiety and develop  and apply practical skills and strategies to manage anxiety and improve driving confidence to begin or to return to driving generally or in specific driving situations. The programme also includes practical driving sessions with a driving instructor. It is suitable for people who have never driven, are returning to driving after an accident or would like to improve their confidence to drive in certain situations. The presentation will provide an overview of the programme, its benefits and outcomes.


Dr Jacqui Triffitt works as a Clinical Psychologist and Sport and Exercise Psychologist at Hill Street Psychology. Clinically she works primarily in the areas of anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Jacqui has worked with athletes and teams competing at Olympic and National level. She has published the Back in the Driver’s seat book.
