Dance theatre in cultural and health behaviour shift

Owen Allen

1Phoenix Functions, 5 Jack St, Atherton, Qld, 4883.

Premised on the need for a broad cultural shift in Australian society as the fundamental process for improving health across the lifespan and the immediate generations to come, this presentation will look at the growing role for dance as a vehicle for individual and cultural change.

Asking, “What do we do as allied health professions to advance cultural shift?” and “What are the most effective tools for optimising human life and health?”, the presentation will challenge allied health professionals to look outside the health industry to such arts industries as dance for the development of appropriate and adequate resources to these questions.

The presentation will be in two equal parts: An overview of the possibilities in community theatre dance training for people of all physical capacities over the life span for optimised physical, cognitive, emotional, and expressive skills; authentic social engagement; and an access to social discourse, drawing on the examples of Owen’s current projects and training in dance and movement in Atherton, Qld, and the USA, and with reference to diverse dance companies and; a conversation with the audience on the role of allied health professionals in expanding the creative expressive dimension of community for cultural shift and optimal human life.
