Data for outcomes, quality and performance in allied health

Mr Matthew Webb1

1South Eastern Sydney Local Health District, Sydney, Australia

Allied Health Managers have had a lack of visibility of quality of care data in their services beyond National Standards Audits, Incident Reports, Service Reviews and Quality Improvement Activities. Data markers used have typically been performance measures such as occasions of service, which are inaccurate and prone to misinterpretation when comparing different clinical areas, services and streams.

South Eastern Sydney Local Health District has developed a dashboard linking the Allied Health Minimum Dataset to admitted patient data and Synaptix outcome data (Sub-Acute, Palliative, GEM) to inform the quality of care provided to our patients.

The dashboard can effectively monitor staff development and performance, responsiveness of services to new admissions, allied health length of stay, age cohort interventions, diagnostic related groups and patient outcome measure changes (such as the Functional Independence Measure) matched to clinician intervention time and occasions of service. This type of data analytics has only previously been accessible at a rigorously controlled research level.

Clinicians and managers can easily review vast quantities of data quickly and easily to monitor the quality and effectiveness of their services as opposed to performance based metrics which are prone to misinterpretation across disciplines, services, streams and teams. This assists in shaping staff development, resource allocation and provides feedback to executive management in response to fiscal and performance reviews.
