How prepared are you to lead your school in Global Citizenship Education?

Alisa Cleary1

1Global Learning Centre, Windsor, Australia

Global Citizenship Education (GCE) is gaining momentum worldwide, as reflected by initiatives like PISA’s new global competence test and the inclusion of GCE in Target 4.7 of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal on Education. Queensland schools are introducing GCE into their classrooms, actively engaging students from kindergarten to year 12, with outstanding results.

A key ingredient to effective GCE requires the involvement of the whole school and active participation of school leaders from planning, through to implementation and evaluation. Since 1986 the Global Learning Centre (Brisbane) has supported school leaders and teachers to develop a common understanding, shared vision and goals for a school-wide approach to GCE. In 2016 the Global Learning Centre mentored two Queensland state schools that were rewarded for their excellent practices in GCE through the annual Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools.

Facilitated by Alisa Cleary, coordinator of the Global Learning Centre’s professional development program this workshop will engage participants in what it takes to be an outstanding leader in Global Citizenship Education. School leaders will have an opportunity to consider their own vision for GCE and reflect upon how effectively their schools are embracing the principles of GCE. The workshop will also feature a short film illustrating the exemplary practices taking place in award-winning GCE Queensland schools. Alisa will share the frameworks used by these schools to align GCE with national and state curriculum priorities as well as school-centred goals, vision and practices.
