Background

SA Pharmacy and Country Health SA Local Health Network (CHSALHN) have developed a framework to guide the development and quality improvement of pharmacy services provided to CHSALHN hospitals.  It aims to ensure that appropriate service models responsive to the needs of patients, local communities and CHSALHN organisational priorities are implemented across country South Australia.

A proof of concept trial utilising a hub and spoke service model was commenced in the Riverland Mallee Coorong region in 2015. Evaluation of the model involves patient, nursing and medical stakeholder feedback.

Method

A 14 question survey was developed and distributed (hard-copy and electronically)  to nurses at all six spoke health services (Barmera, Lameroo, Loxton, Pinnaroo, Renmark, Waikerie) over a period of six weeks. At the end of the survey period, all hard-copy surveys were collected and entered into “surveysa”. Data was analysed using Microsoft® Excel.

Results

A total of 24 surveys were collected from all sites with 71% of surveys fully completed. Roughly, 36.8% of nurses found that the new process of ordering and receiving medication impacted their role negatively; however, about 90% and 60% of nurses felt positive with the timely supply and control of inventory respectively. The majority of nurses, 81% felt positive about having a Clinical Pharmacist in the ward and 85% found information provided by the Pharmacist useful.

Discussion

Overall, nurses expressed negatively and positively about the implementation of non-clinical and clinical pharmacy services respectively. This early feedback will inform the rollout of future sites with further evaluation required once the service has matured.
