Josh King1, Dwayne Rees1
1Quality Learning Coach (QLC), Murrumba State Secondary College
At Murrumba State Secondary College, Reading for Life is our reading comprehension strategy. It was designed on site to support our students’ learning across all grades and subject areas. Over the last 3 years, we have shared great success in Reading for Life with our school community and are extremely proud of our achievements at MSSC.
In 2017, Richard Lewis from Nauru Secondary School and Rosario Taumea from Nauru’s Education Department made a visit to our College. We provided them with a Reading for Life resource pack in the hope that it would also benefit their teachers and students back home.
On Sunday the 11th of February 2018, Dwayne and I were invited to fly across the Pacific Ocean to spend a week sharing our Reading for Life strategy with the teachers and students of Nauru. Our goal was to provide professional development to staff and model the strategy in classrooms as much as possible.
It was very pleasing and reassuring to see the strategy being successful in a new context. For us, it has reconfirmed its effectiveness and strengthened our belief in using Reading for Life to enhance reading comprehension skills in students from a range of diverse backgrounds.
This presentation will discuss our trip to Nauru and highlight the processes we went through to successfully embed a foundation for Reading for Life in their schools.
Josh created the Reading for Life strategy with Sarah Roper in 2016. He has been teaching in secondary for 7 years in English, Humanities and HPE.
Dwayne is a Reading for Life expert in charge of embedding the strategy at MSSC. He has 20 years primary teaching experience and has spent the last 4 years in secondary teaching Maths and Science. Dwayne is also an accredited Highly Accomplished Teacher.
Both Dwayne and Josh currently fulfil roles as Quality Learning Coaches at Murrumba with a focus on improving teacher pedagogy and student outcomes through the use of Reading for Life.
