Stimulating interest in Mathematics learning – a Chinese perspective

This session will share Chinese experiences of stimulating the interest in Mathematics learning. Investigating the data of students’ interest in Mathematics from three surveys conducted in 2000, 2010 and 2016, this session will further analyse the reason why students’ interest in learning Mathematics has changed.  The experience of China’s Mathematics teaching and learning will also be shared.


Professor Liu, Jian, National Educational Inspector, Doctoral Supervisor, Chief Expert and Vice Dean of China Collaborative Innovation Centre of Basic Education Quality Assessment. Professor Liu initiated and drove the Project of Chinese National Curriculum Standards, including its development, implementation and revision. Professor Liu acted as the leader of the composing group of China National Mathematics Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education (2000-2010). Professor Liu conducted a number of researches on curriculum and instruction, education assessment and diagnosis, and pedagogy of Mathematics. Professor Liu advocated many nationwide educational programs, such as “Math for All”, “New Curriculum Reform”, “Green Index of Education Quality”, and “Comprehensive evaluation of Education Quality”.
