The Professional Certificate in Practice education is an online program, with optional teleclass sessions aimed at health professionals who supervise students and/or staff within their work roles.    The program aims to increase the understanding, skills and expertise in supervising learners in the workplace, through reflection on their current practice and applying new models, approaches and tools,  in line with the participant’s (organisation’s) goals and priorities.  Participants are able to study with interprofessional colleagues and grow their professional network.   The program consists of 6 modules in 2 courses, and incorporates 2 workshops.

Surveys are conducted via survey Monkey at the end of each module and at completion of each course.  The survey at the end of each module provides participants an opportunity to provide feedback about the module and training and consists of 9 open ended questions.   The instrument used for the survey at the end of the course is based on Kirkpatrick’s* four levels of evaluation and consists of 10 open answer questions.

Since the commencement in July 2012, over 100 practice educators from 12 disciplines have undertaken the course.   An overview of the program and an analysis of the data will be discussed.

The strength of an online program, where participants are encouraged to share their assignments with others, is that the participants communicate with each other and share ideas and good practice.  Many of the participants have reported using techniques shared through the teleclasses, assignments and discussion boards in their own supervision.

Rosanne is the Nursing and Allied Health Academic for the Department of Rural Health, University of South Australia.  She part of a team who provide education support for students on rural placement as well as support for clinical supervisors throughout the state.
