Background

Podiatry service provision on Lower Eyre Peninsular (LEP) has provided many challenges for health service coordination over the past few years. Concerns have been raised by the local community and GP’s regarding inequity of podiatry services between Port Lincoln, Lower Eyre and other areas in Country Health South Australia.(CHSA).

Methodology

Following a complete review of the Podiatry Service in Port Lincoln and LEP led by the ACL podiatrist in conjunction with the stakeholders Medicare North and with Cummins Medical Clinic and Bay View Medical Services and the community. A new service delivery model was proposed that built on previous collaborative work between CHSA podiatry and the Uni SA school of Podiatry. This partnership has led to the pilot Eyre Peninsular Podiatry Integrated Clinical Service (EPPIC) for the residents of LEP.

Outcomes

This collaboration has provided a unique opportunity to create and implement a model of care for podiatry on Lower Eyre Peninsular that is delivered jointly by students and CHSA Podiatry staff. It is based on the clinical risk of the population; as well as building in elements for sustainability as the demand for services grows with an increasing aging population. It has allows us to maximise and optimise the use of the podiatrists’ skills and abilities as well as providing a high quality clinical experience for the students. The model of care aims to provide residents on LEP with access to podiatry and foot care services that are equitable, consistent and sustainable.
